Sens. Gary Peters (D-MI) and John Cornyn (R-TX) announced on April 28 their reintroduction of bipartisan legislation to strengthen border security and increase Customs and Border Protection (CBP) staffing at ports of entry. The Securing America’s Ports of Entry Act (S. 1253) would fully staff America’s airports, seaports, and land ports-of-entry by requiring CBP to hire no less than 600 additional officers a year until the agency’s staffing needs are met.

The NCBFAA Regulatory Agencies Committee (RAC) challenged the National Marine Fisheries Service's (NMFS) cost analysis for an expanded Seafood Import Monitoring Program (SIMP) in comments submitted to the agency on April 27. NMFS estimated a SIMP entry takes 18 minutes to complete, a figure the NCBFAA RAC called “not realistic.”
