Alan R. Klestadt is a partner in the law firm of Grunfeld, Desiderio, Lebowitz, Silverman & Klestadt LLP. The firm, which has offices in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Boston and Hong Kong, has over 40 lawyers on staff, all of whom are devoted exclusively to the practice of customs and international trade law.
While attending law school, Mr. Klestadt successfully sat for his customs broker’s license and received his license in 1981. Mr. Klestadt graduated from law school in 1983 and was elected to the partnership of his firm in 1989.
Mr. Klestadt currently serves as Customs Counsel to the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (“NCBFAA”). In his role as counsel to the NCBFAA, Mr. Klestadt provides guidance on regulatory and legislative proposals that impact the customs brokerage industry. He works closely with the executive officers of the Association and counsels brokerage clients on a wide variety of compliance issues.
Mr. Klestadt assists clients in structuring their import transactions in order to minimize customs duties, ensure regulatory compliance and eliminate customs penalty exposure. He has extensive experience in managing compliance reviews and developing strategies to maximize import opportunities. Mr. Klestadt lectures frequently on issues relating to customs valuation, import strategy and regulatory compliance.
He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Court of International Trade and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York. He is a member of the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association and the Customs and International Trade Bar Association.
