APHIS To Require Pest Permit for Imported Earthworms

May 30, 2022 by Luke Zimmer
Beginning July 1, the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will require importers of earthworms to obtain a PPQ 526 pest permit. APHIS PPQ will only issue permits for earthworms from countries that are free from foot-and-mouth disease. The permit requires strict compliance with conditions related to the rearing and shipping of earthworms.

The updated policy reflects the agency’s concerns that earthworms ingest soil that may contain animal and plant pathogens that could be transported inside the worms. The permit will apply to all earthworm species. For more information, visit the APHIS Earthworm site.
