The Ports of Long Beach/Los Angeles Request the FMC to Publish Guidance on Demurrage and Detention Charges
On Friday, March 20th, Mario Cordero, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach conveyed that he and Eugene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, conducted a conference with the Federal Maritime Commission requesting the Commission issue guidance on applying demurrage and detention charges. Due to the COVID-19 virus, and the closing of China, a large backlog of empty containers are congesting the port facilities. The two ports asked for FMC guidance to help avoid excessive and unfair charges being applied. The NCBFAA will also convey to the FMC the need for expedited guidance to be published for the benefit of all supply chain participants.
